SERGEY IVANOV

DEPUTY CHAIRMAN OF THE GOVERNMENT OF THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION, CHAIRMAN OF THE MARINE BOARD OF THE GOVERNMENT OF THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION

Dear guests of the International conference St. Petersburg the sea capital of Russia. Transport and transit potential!

On behalf of the Marine Board of the Government of the Russian Federation allow me to greet you at the international conference, held within the project of the UNITED RUSSIA party St. Petersburg the sea capital of Russia.

The conference takes place for the third time and the number of participants grows year by year. It should be noted that at this event the most actual issues on transport sphere development are discussed at highly professional level. At the conference the full range of issues on national transport and logistics sector and influence of international processes of globalization on the transport sphere will be considered.

The potential of the Russian Federation in attraction of international transit cargo flows is rather considerable and Russian sea ports contribute to the implementation of this potential.

Sea transport plays an important role in development of the countrys economy and transport supply of its foreign economic relations. We should not only constantly modernize the infrastructure of sea and river ports of the country, renovate fleet and dredge, we should also search for and develop new transport routes and corridors profitable for the Russian and world economy. For instance, in the sphere of sea cargo transportation it is the Northern Sea Route, first of all.

Development of cargo shipment along the Northern Sea Route is one of the crucial goals of the Maritime Doctrine of the Russian Federation. Today the Ministry of Transport of Russia actively works out a strategy for strengthening the status of the Northern Sea Route as an independent Euro-Asian sea transport corridor under Russias control. In this respect I consider discussion of the modern state of the Northern Sea Route and prospects of its development within the framework of this conference extremely important.

I am sure that participants of the conference will find solutions of topical issues of the transport sphere of Russia contributing to full implementation of its transport potential.

I wish success and fruitful work to the participants of the conference.

IGOR LEVITIN

MINISTER OF TRANSPORT OF THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION

Transport and logistics sector of Russias economy as an engine for trade and economic relations should develop in accordance with up-to-date requirements. Stabilization of economic situation requires immediate fulfillment of the existing tasks on increasing traffic capacity of routes and their correspondence to the international standards.

In conditions of world economic globalization it is the interstate relations that stimulate further development. Modernization of transit corridors, improvement of legal basis that regulates transport sphere will strengthen the status of Russia as a reliable partner, open new growth prospects. In this respect methodical work of governmental authorities and business communities and forming of one view-point on development is necessary.

Annual conferences of the Project of the UNITED RUSSIA Party St. Petersburg the sea capital of RUSSIA is a good possibility to discuss current issues of transport and transit potential of Russia and promising areas of further development of the transport sphere in detail.
