On the 20 of November, 1809 (December 2, New Style Calendar), School of Engineers of water and land communications and with it Institute of engineers of communication lines were established by a manifesto of Emperor Alexander I. It was placed in the palace, bought by the Treasury from Prince Nikolai Yusupov. In November 1810, classes with the pupils of the first set began.

Today there are over 13,000 people that study at Petersburg State Transport University. We have 10 faculties, 52 departments, three branches (in the cities of Velikie Luki, Petrozavodsk and Murmansk) and two representative offices (in the towns of Volkhov and Kaliningrad), and 6 secondary special educational institutions.
